Liverpool National Wrestling

The annual meeting of the Cumberland and Westmoreland wrestlers took place as usual at the house of Mr T. BARNES, Cattle Market Inn, nr the Old Swan, Liverpool on Monday and Tuesday last. On each day the attendance of competitors and spectators was numerous. On the first day 32 persons entered their names for the light-weights and throughout perhaps there was never any wrestling equal in this part of the country.

After the wrestling there was a sack race for two prizes and some merriment was occasioned on Monday by ENTWISTLE a man of twenty three and a half stone in weight and upwards of 60yrs of age entering his name for competition. Eight started, but the heavy weight lost his equilibrium before he had reached half the distance and fell. VICKERS and MOSSOP were the victors.

On Tuesday the competition was open to the light and heavy weights of England, 84 men entered their names. Amongst them was James LITTLE a man of great activity, who has for the last 10yrs withdrawn from competition. The first and second rounds were cleverly contested.

The referees discovered that some arrangements were entered into between the two last men, with a view to influencing the betting and dividing the money. The prizes were therefore withheld from the men and divided between the other competitors. A match between the Liverpool wrestlers afterwards came off, when James PARK was declared the victor, throwing his competitor Robert BROUGH, twice in succession . The sack race was won by WATSON and PALMER, 6 persons started.
