Three die in blazing room

Three young children, Thomas McCOURT, aged 3, his brother James aged 5, and their cousin Kenneth GRIFFIN, aged 4, died at the weekend in a house in St Oswald Street,

The three children were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom. They were alone in the house at the time having been bathed by their aunt. Firemen who forced their way in the blazing bedroom found the children huddled together and unconscious. They were dead on arrival to hospital.

The father of Kenneth GRIFFIN, a widower was standing a 150 yards away when he was told the house was on fire. The smoke and flames were too fierce for him to make a rescue attempt. The father of the McCOURT children is a member of the crew of the Caronia.

An Irish district nurse aged 43, Hannah ODONOVAN died on her way to hospital after she had been rescued by a neighbour when her bed caught fire at her home in Sherburn Ave, Mansfield yesterday
