LIVERPOOL SHIP CAPSIZED
SEVENTEEN LIVES LOST
Lloyds agent at Tacoma, telegraphing under Saturdays date says :-
The ANDELANA was struck by a squall and capsized in the harbour. She was totally lost, all on board are supposed to be lost.
Lloyds San Francisco agent states that the ANDELANA capsized about 3am on Saturday during a violent squall. The vessel had finished discharging ballast logs alongside, equivalent to 350 tons. The Captain and crew were drowned.
The Nova Scotia barque ANDELANA sailed in the middle of last year from New York to Shanghai under the command of Capt STAILING, an able and experienced officer. At Shanghai a portion of the crew were discharged and the vessel proceeded to Port Angeles on the west coast of South America, arriving on the 28th December.
From Port Angeles she sailed northwards, and, making up the strait of Juan di Fuca, arrived safely at Tacoma, Washington.
Late in the night of Friday 13th January a terrific gale sprang up and a squall heeled the vessel over on one side, capsizing her at 3am on the 14th.
The ship had been discharging ballast and logs of 350 tons were alongside. The hatches being open, the water poured in the hold with irresistible force, and in a short time caused the vessel to founder with all on board.
It is not known at the moment how many of the original crew were on her, but the information is hoped to be on hand in a few days. The ANDELANA was a four masted vessel of 2,579 tons reg, belonging to Messers E. F. and W. ROBERTS of Chapel St, Liverpool.
The news of the capsizing has caused interest in Blackpool as two youths from the town were on board, Ernest DOE, as 2nd mate, son of a well known coal merchant and treasurer of the Blackpool Swimming Club and the other Percy BUCK an apprentice.
Names of those saved
Messers ROBERTS of Liverpool managing owners, on Thursday received a reply from their agents at Tacoma stating ;-
THOMPSON, MANSIT, COLOM, PEDRO, SAMEILION, BENARES, OLIPIA, HURRIATT, DIXON, HEWITT deserted, GUNTHER and JULIAN were paid off.
The owners think it unwise to produce the list of those drowned owing to the frequent changes in the crew at different ports as it cannot be correct.
