Emigration to New Zealand on the TORNADO June 1859

Emigration to New Zealand

A week ago we mentioned that the high spirited owners of the “White Star,” line of Australasian ex-royal mail packets had resolved to organise a monthly despatch of one of their magnificent clippers to New Zealand. In stating this, we at the same time expressed our opinion that this was likely to prove a highly important addition to the passenger traffic of Liverpool.

These gentlemen despatch their first ship, the TORNADO for Auckland and Wellington today.

The TORNADO takes out 285 passengers of whom the following are saloon and 1st class passengers ;-

Mr and Mrs MANSFORD, Alfred Augustus and Herbert MANSFORD

Mr and Mrs CROKER and 4 children

Mr A. DURELL

Mr and Mrs GRAHAM

Mr KNIGHT and Mrs KNIGHT, Mr John KNIGHT

Mr FRANK, Mr Philip DUKE, Mr John HUGHES

Mr and Mrs Gerald De Courcey LEFROY, Masters Henry and William and Miss Fanny LEFROY

Mr William STEWART

Miss JAMES

Mr and Mrs CARR and Miss CARR

Rev Mr FOSTER, Mrs FOSTER and 2 children

Mr CLARKE

The resources of New Zealand, which are well known to be extensive and most valuable, are now beginning to attract additional attention from the facilities recently afforded by the Colonial as well as the home Government, in allowing easy means for the acquirement of land, which is given out in free grants of 40acres each, in the most liberal manner to all eligible emigrants.

We are glad to perceive that Messer’s T. WILSON and CHAMBERS owners of the “White Star,” line are about to send out their magnificent ship MERMAID to Auckland and Wellington on the 10th of July, and are, if possible, still more gratified to learn that she is already well taken up for both passengers and cargo.
