LOSS OF THE CANADIAN

THIRTY FOUR LIVES LOST.

Londonderry Friday - The NORTH BRITON arrived at Moville this morning, she lost 70hrs through ice and fog.

The CANADIAN was lost on the 4th, she struck an iceberg 7miles east of Belle Isle and foundered 35 minutes after, 5 miles from the island. It is supposed 24 passengers and 10 crew are lost. Capt GRAHAM and the saved went to St John’s in a French vessel. The 1st and 4th officers and 5 seamen were left behind to intercept the NORTH BRITON, which also attempted the passage but could not get south owing to impenetrable ice and fog.

The CANADIAN, Capt J. GRAHAM, was a screw steamer of 400hp, 2000tons burthen and capable of carrying 1310tons. She was a new vessel built by Messers STEEL of Greenock last year. She was barque rigged, and constructed with 5 watertight bulkheads, which appear to have been smashed by the force of the collision. The crew consisted of 88 men and she was carrying 89 passengers. Messers ALLEN Bros and Co, Brunswick St, were the Liverpool agents for the unfortunate vessel.
