William Netterville Davies IRELAND, died 14th Aug 1895, aged 11yrs, at Bootle Hospital, son of Dr Richard. Joseph. Ireland, 2 Harlech St, Walton, Patrick Bailey O’Callaghan, [a medical man with no papers] Dr Ireland’s assistant was charged with causing the boys death, at a Coroner’s inquest verdict of “wilfull murder” was returned. O’Callaghan, had been drinking all day with Mrs Ireland and got into a drunken rage when the whiskey ran out, he shared a bed with the boy, and beat him severely while in the rage, the boy was found on the bed with his intestines hanging out. Remarkable demonstrations were made by the public at the boy’s funeral, which was advertised to be at Ford cemetery to fool the public, the revelations of the relations between O’Callaghan, and Mrs Mary Malinda Ireland who had been drinking together at the time the boy met his death aroused great indignation among the populace, several thousands hooted Mrs Ireland, she had to be protected by the police, the boy was interred at Anfield Cemetery August 18, 1895
