On the formation of the volunteer movement in 1859, was one of the first to join the Ayrshire Volunteers, came to Liverpool in 1861 and joined the, then existing Scottish, volunteer corps, on this corps being disbanded in 1863, he joined the 4th L.A.V, for upwards of 23yrs a member of the 4th L.A.V, in 1875 promoted to Sgt Major of No 1 Battery, the Fourth Brigade Carbine Club, formed in 1866, the first of its kind in the country, owes its origin in great measure to the deceased, who was for several years looked upon as the crack carbine shot of the country, interred at Anfield Cemetery April 8, 1891

John DOYLE, one of the 8th Hussars, who rode in the famous Balaklava charge, and served throughout the Crimean war as trooper in the regiment, a humble funeral with few mourners, but among those who paid their respects were two of his fellow campaigners, James LANISTER a trooper in the 11th Hussars and William PEARSON of the 4th Light Dragoons, Sgt TARPLEY of DOYLE’S own regiment came from Norwich to attend his funeral, there was only one relative Miss LAVAN a niece and another chief mourner DOYLE’S landlady in Manchester Mrs McFADDEN. The coffin was taken to the grave [a public one] on the shoulders of four of the 12th Lancers, interred at Anfield Cemetery August 16, 1892.
