Singular disposal of the body of a child in Liverpool

At 9.30am on Saturday, a boy named John LYSIGHT of 10 Gerrard St found a coffin lying in a midden at No 1 Court, Gerrard St, and he informed PC 448 of the circumstances. The officer found the coffin bore the inscription on the lid, "Jane E. SWEETMAN, died 2nd October, 1878, aged two weeks." It was taken to the central police office, on being opened was found to contain the dead body of a female child, which was afterwards taken to the deadhouse. The mother, Mrs SWEETMAN, living in Bailey St, afterwards identified and claimed the body as that of her child, and her statement in explanation of the reason why the body was found in the midden was to the effect that a neighbour named Jane SINNOTT, living in Frederick St, during her absence had removed the coffin from the house. About 7pm the same evening SINNOTT returned in a state of intoxication, and when Mrs SWEETMAN asked what she had done with the body of the child, she replied that she had collected 4s-6d in the neighbourhood, with which she had buried the child at Anfield. On being searched however the burial order was found in her pocket, and she then stated the body was at Anfield Cemetery, but she had been too late to get it buried that day. The mother called in the police and the woman was taken to the central police office, where she persisted in saying the body was at the cemetery. The police directed Mrs SWEETMAN to go there with the woman on Saturday, but on the way she gave the mother the slip, and had not been seen since. Of course, the mother failed to find the child at the cemetery, as it had been already found as above stated. Yesterday Mrs SWEETMAN produced the burial order to the deputy-coroner Mr C. S. SAMUEL detailing the above facts and he gave her permission to remove the body for interment, and also recommended that the police constable in the case report the facts to his superior officers with the view of taking proceedings against the woman who had removed the body.
